Across six novels, A Surgeon’s Heart moves from exposing the systemic forces that increasingly separate physicians from their patients to something more ambitious: the creation of an alternative model of healthcare built around patient care, physician autonomy, innovation, and competition. Inspired in part by the historical rise of the Mayo Clinic as a challenge to what had gone before, the story asks whether meaningful reform must come from changing an entrenched system—or from building something better outside it and allowing success to become the argument.
